The Dutton family faces devastating tragedy in episode 3 of 1923, Jacob, Cara, John Sr., Jack, Emma and Liz are on their way back to the farm when they are ambushed. They all hear a shot ring in the distance and another soon follows, hitting Liz in the stomach. His white dress immediately becomes covered in blood.

Jacob shouts to get the buggy out of there. More shots are fired, and Jack is hit in the arm. The buggy horses spook during the shootout and gallop off with Liz in her seat. Kara and Emma run for cover with Jacob and John Sr. nearby. Zane and the Cowboys realize something is amiss and rush to help Dutton.

Dutton is on his way back to the farm. (top+)

Jack chases after Liz in the runaway buggy. He manages to get control of the horses and knocks Liz out. Suddenly the shooting stops. But the fight is not over yet. Men on horseback approach from the woods, and Jack decides to shoot at them. He starts another shootout. Jacob, Kara and John Sr. fire from their positions, and Banner Creighton appears from behind with an automatic weapon.

“Jacob Dutton, I’m a man of my word!” Banner yells at him before firing at Dutton. Jacob tells everyone to run, but it’s no use. Jacob and Jack Sr. are hit several times. Kara and Emma are able to run to safety next to Jack and Liz. Thankfully, Zane and the Cowboys come to Dutton’s aid.

Banner gets off in his car. Zane orders Jack to go get the buggy. Kara senses that something is not right with Jacob and Jack Sr. She finds Jacob in terrible shape, with blood coming from his nose. He has been shot multiple times.

John Dutton Sr. Has Been Killed

When she sees John Sr., he is dead. He has been shot directly in the eye. Emma screams for John Sr. and Kara begs her not to come. Emma doesn’t listen to him. Emma sees that John Sr. is dead and walks in shell-shocked.

In the distance, Cara spots one of the Irish raiders. She shoots him once, and he begs her to stop. He tells her that if she kills him, she will go to hell. In the same scene we saw in the pilot episode, Kara pulls out her gun, but it’s empty. They both quickly run to reload, and Kara is able to kill him before he can shoot her.

Jacob and Liz are taken back to Dutton House. They are laid out on the kitchen table. Jacob is in terrible shape. Kara sees that Jacob’s wounds are serious. Jacob may ask Zane if they got all that. Zane reveals that Banner is gone, but he will call the sheriff first. Jacob urges Zane not to call the sheriff.

“It’s of no use,” Jacob tells Kara about his wounds. Kara remains optimistic. She is not going to leave him. “Spencer should be home now. Bring her home,” he tells her.

Kara begs Spencer to return

Doctors and nurses arrive to help Kara, along with Jacob and Liz. Emma is still sitting in the buggy with John Sr.’s body. The Doctor walks into a bloody scene. He tells Kara to leave. Timing is of the essence when it comes to saving Yakuza.

Kara moves out and begins texting Spencer, who is still in Africa. “Spencer, your brother has been killed,” she writes. “By the time you receive this letter, I understand that your uncle has also been killed. Your nephew has been wounded. This farm and your inheritance are in danger. War has descended on this place and your family. You Whatever battle you fight within, it must wait. You must come home and fight it. New episodes of 1923 Premieres Sunday on Paramount+.
